Fact Sheet: Undetectable Viral Load

We evaluated the therapeutic role of digital storytelling for adolescents with HIV. Abstract The global commitment to universal access for people in need of antiretroviral therapy has transformed the lives of adolescents with HIV. In contrast, there has been limited commitment at policy or service level to the need for effective therapeutic interventions which can help them to cope with their life experiences. It is imperative that the scale up of antiretroviral therapy programmes is accompanied by evidence-based therapeutic approaches if we are to assist adolescents to make informed treatment and secondary prevention decisions and to enjoy happy, fulfilled lives. This pilot study sought to evaluate the digital storytelling process as a therapeutic intervention for 12 HIV positive adolescents and young people within Africaid’s Zvandiri programme in Harare, Zimbabwe. Drawing on narrative therapy, each storyteller created a digital film in which they narrated their life experiences and dominant themes in their lives. Storytellers found the process therapeutic as it helped them to move away from the negative themes which dominated their lives to a newer, richer perspective of their lives in which they had overcome challenges. Their films have provided caregivers and programmers with new insights into the challenges they faced and appropriate interventions for other adolescents living with HIV. Previous article in issue.

Most lesbian, gay, bisexual, LGB youth are happy and thrive during their adolescent years. Having a school that creates a safe and supportive learning environment for all students and having caring and accepting parents are especially important. Positive environments can help all youth achieve good grades and maintain good mental and physical health.

However, some LGB youth are more likely than their heterosexual peers to experience negative health and life outcomes. For youth to thrive in schools and communities, they need to feel socially, emotionally, and physically safe and supported. A complex combination of factors can impact youth health outcomes.

LGB youth are at greater risk for depression, suicide, substance use, and sexual behaviors that can place them at increased risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases STDs. For example, research has shown that in schools with LGB support groups such as gay-straight alliances , LGB students were less likely to experience threats of violence, miss school because they felt unsafe, or attempt suicide than those students in schools without LGB support groups.

Parental rejection has been linked to depression, use of drugs and alcohol, and risky sexual behavior among teens. If bullying, violence, or depression is suspected, parents should take immediate action, working with school personnel and other adults in the community. The following are research-based steps parents can take to support the health and well-being of their LGB teen: Parents who talk with and listen to their teen in a way that invites an open discussion about sexual orientation can help their teen feel loved and supported.

Parents should have honest conversations with their teens about sex and how to avoid risky behaviors and unsafe situations.

Serostatus is a word used to describe whether particular antibodies are present in the body. Seropositive means someone does have the antibodies being tested for, seronegative means they do not. Seroconversion Seroconversion is the point at which the body changes from being seronegative to seropositive. Once the virus is in the body, the immune system will begin producing antibodies.

A third of these deaths occurred in six countries: These studies combine demographic, survey, clinical and verbal autopsy data to provide comprehensive, population-based estimates of the incidence of new HIV infections, the number of PLHIV, their experience of diagnosis and treatment, and their survival.

For many PLHIV, these data permit estimation of seroconversion date and dating of diagnosis of infection, initiation of antiretroviral therapy ART and interruption of treatment. However, the continuing high HIV mortality burden indicates that improvements in HIV testing, care and treatment are still needed. Failure to progress in a timely manner from infection to diagnosis and from diagnosis to treatment will have a deleterious impact on mortality rates and onward HIV transmission.

Data on ART initiation and adherence are commonly available and readily collated from ART clinics with computerised records, but data on time of diagnosis and confirmation of eligibility for ART are less frequently recorded in formats that permit aggregation of those data for monitoring purposes. Furthermore, dates of seroconversion are not routinely estimated in the course of HIV testing or clinical care.
