Christian Dating Culture (Part 1): Majority of Christian Singles Reject Idea of Waiting Until Marriage to Have Sex “I think a lot of people who are dating in the Christian world, say late 20s, early 30s, they did ‘the right thing.’ and dating recreationally without a view toward marriage,” as examples of ways that the Church has adopted.
Christian Dating and Courtship, Part 1: Leadership Ever since Joshua Harris kissed dating goodbye in , the dating vs. I do not intend to enter that debate directly here. Rather, I want to lay down a few vital biblical principles to help you to think carefully about romantic relationships, regardless of whether you think dating or courting best facilitates the implementation of these principles.
I will discuss these principles in a series of posts. Initiate the Relationship and Keep on Initiating The idea that God has designed and called men to bear a unique responsibility to lead in their relationships to women has been challenged ever since the fall Gen 3: In our contemporary context, however, there seems to be a particularly acute and nuanced resistance to this notion, and areas of male leadership that were once assumed are now questioned as outmoded at best, patriarchal and misogynistic at worst.
Adding difficulty to an already difficult situation is the reality that men, also since the fall, have an inward propensity toward passivity: But the relational structures that God has put in place will inevitably rise to the surface of our experience, and men and women will often find they are most satisfied when the man takes the helm of leadership in the area of romance.
This is not to suggest that it is wrong, in every circumstance, for a woman to take the first step; what matters is not so much who takes the first step, but whether or not the man initiates the relationship from that point on. What does it mean to initiate a romantic relationship? It means, practically, to find ways to talk to the girl with whom you are interested. But intentionality must characterize our conduct during the entire relationship, not just the beginning. This means that you continue to plan time together, guide the conversation to edifying topics, and regularly communicate your intentions.

Online Christian Dating or Courtship? January 1, Dating Advice , Dating Relationships , Singles Articles Recently, a pastor friend of mine explained why he is not only against online Christian dating, but also the concept of dating in general. While he did not come out and say that dating is unbiblical there are some Christians who feel this way , he argued that it cheapens the courtship process and encourages single Christians to enter casual relationships that are here today and gone tomorrow.
The pastor started out by rightly reminding me that dating is a relatively new phenomenon of the last hundred years or so. Before that time, singles were said to court one another. Courtship was not a casual thing to do on a Friday night, but a serious process whereby the families of the single gal and single guy decide whether or not marriage should be the end result.
However, among Christians, you still hear “courtship” and “dating” used interchangeably; indicating that many single people find the terms to mean the same thing.
This blog post has been expanded and clarified in my book Courtship in Crisis. For months we could talk of little else. After reading it myself, I grew into as big an opponent of dating as you could find. Dating was evil and Courtship, whatever it was, was godly, good and Biblical. I explained what courtship was and quoted Joshua Harris, chapter and verse. Their response surprised me. I tried to convince them but to no avail. They both obstinately held to the position that courtship was a foolish idea.
Well, what did they know? They were public schooled. I ignored their advice on relationships, preferring to listen to the young people around me who were passionate advocates of courtship. As I grew older, I started to speak at homeschool conferences and events. I talked with homeschool parents, students and alumni all over the country and started to see some challenges with making courtship work. Some of the specific challenges I identified were:

What should we go deeper into? Session One To know deep, lasting joy, we have to truly know Christ. With this in mind, we wanted to create a Bible study that would be exegetically strong and focused on personal spiritual vitality.
Courtship is the traditional dating period before engagement and marriage (or long term commitment if marriage is not allowed). It is an alternative to arranged marriages in which the couple or group doesn’t meet before the wedding.
David Crank Much has been written and taught in recent years about the problems of modern dating and the alternatives of Christian courtship or betrothal. Though this seems to be a very new and recent idea, its roots go back much earlier. Bill Gothard also adopted the term and further defined what it meant. By the early s several Christian teachers were spreading the word, particularly within the homeschooling community.
Fictional novels encouraging courtship have been written by the Castleberrys. Seminars and audio tapes have been offered by Lindvall, Reb Bradley and others. Numerous magazine articles have been published. What do we find when comparing these many and various teachings? There is substantial agreement on many points. All point out the dangers and poor outcomes of modern dating.
Many contribute useful ideas, concepts and illustrations. Although agreeing in many areas, there remain disagreements – some significant, many minor. Why are there many differences?

Duration[ edit ] The average duration of courtship varies considerably throughout the world. Furthermore, there is vast individual variation between couples. Courtship may be completely omitted, as in cases of some arranged marriages where the couple do not meet before the wedding. In the United Kingdom , a poll of 3, engaged or married couples resulted in an average duration between first meeting and accepted proposal of marriage of 2 years and 11 months, with the women feeling ready to accept at an average of 2 years and 7 months.
The date is fairly casual in most European-influenced cultures, but in some traditional societies, courtship is a highly structured activity, with very specific formal rules. In some societies, the parents or community propose potential partners and then allow limited dating to determine whether the parties are suited.
In my view, if you can’t happily picture yourself married within a year, you’re not in a position to date. Third, once you decide that you are ready to date, look to God’s Word to decide the kind of person to date, and evaluate potential dating partners on those criteria, rather than relying primarily on the world’s treatment of ideas.
What is the difference between dating and courting? Dating and courtship are two methods of beginning relationships with the opposite sex. While there are non-Christians who date with the intention of having a series of intimate physical relationships, for the Christian this is not acceptable and should never be the reason for dating. Many Christians see dating as little more than friendship and maintain the friendship aspect of their dating until both people are ready to commit to each other as potential marriage partners.
First and foremost, dating is a time when a Christian finds out if his or her potential marriage partner is also a believer in Christ. The Bible warns us that believers and unbelievers should not marry each other, because those living in the light of Christ and those living in the darkness cannot live in harmony 2 Corinthians 6: As stated before, during this time there should be little or no physical contact, as this is something that should wait until marriage 1 Corinthians 6:
